.me.
my name is Dominic Antoine Thomas and the purpose of my writing is to allow you to glimpse into the world in which i live, for you to see me through my words. i am the oldest and only son, and the big brother. i’m an artist. art is in my spirit. i can’t suppress it or hide it. i love the idea of creating a masterpiece out of 26 little characters, it’s amazing to me. for me to be blessed enough to sit and create something without thought or intention is beyond my comprehension. i give God all the glory, He’s great at what He does, and He has blessed me. i don’t label anything that i write, it’s just how i feel, how someone else feels, something i need to tell myself, or something i need to tell someone else. my emotions have a way of manifesting themselves artistically. when i think about it, i find that i’m a storyteller, whether through the page as a poet or through music as a songwriter. i love symbolism, plays on words, and double meanings; they’re mysterious and open to interpretation. my hope is that my gift of writing will serve as a source of inspiration to others. i’m shy, and i’m nervous, and i’m afraid that what i do won’t be accepted or liked, but i’m realizing that i felt what i felt, and i wrote what i wrote. period. at the end of the week, i’m one week stronger. at the end of the day, i’m one day smarter. i continue to grow in multiple ways, therefore i continue to write.
.truth.revisited.
truth is a simple, but sometimes painful, reality made complex through societal standards, stereotypes, ignorance, and lies. plato explained it best in his “allegory of the cave.” truth is seen in the light, not from the shadows made from it. imagine being in a dark movie theater for three hours and emerging to the bright outdoors. the first reactions are to squint, cover your eyes, and retreat someplace darker; the light is too bright. so you must emerge, painfully adjusting your eyes to what is. spending a life in darkness only to be ripped from the very thing you based your reality in is painful. there is a denial of what is; as you’ve been so conditioned to see only the shadows of truth, which is worse than a mirrored image as shadows are often vague and skewed. there must be a revisitation of the light, a revisitation of the truth in order for your eyes to adjust and your fears to be shattered. it is during the revisitation period that you begin to understand…
the truth is oftentimes difficult to take in. a revisitation is necessary for growth.
truth is chaos. revisiting is understanding.
.the poetics noire.
i belong to a poet family/group known as The Poetics Noire , created by friend and fellow Howard University student, Britany Elise Rickett. the Poetics Noire: Volume I is a poetry anthology created to combat the lack of positive literature in the media that is targeted to minority audiences. featuring poets from all over the nation including: students at Howard University, Prairie View A&M University, and the University of Houston to name a few, the anthology is a vehicle to get the “rejected” voice into the hearts and ears of the masses. it is time that a new generation steps up to be the leaders and gatekeepers in the fight for socially conscious literature and media. the Poetics Noire is managed by Sparkle Bee Media.
